Monastery of Santa María de Carracedo

It was declared a national monument. The Benedictine Monastery of San Salvador de Carracedo was founded in 990 by Bermudo II, “The Gouty”, who donated a place next to Cúa River to host the monks who were fleeing from Almanzor. The monastery was destroyed by Almanzor and there is no remain from that construction. In the 12th century, Infanta Doña Sancha ordered a restoration which still remains today.

In 1203, the monastery joined the Cister and became Santa María. It had a great economic, religious and political power and it had also jurisdiction over other monasteries in Galicia, Asturias and León. The Napoleonic invasion and the disentailments caused its abandon, until 1988 when it was restored.

The monastery is a succession of styles: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassic.

The ruins of García Rodríguez’s Family Pantheon are inside its church. There is something relevant: on the Romanesque door of Church, an inscription explains that on August 29th 1810 the first democratic representative of Leonese citizens was elected in the Cortes de Cádiz (Courts of Cádiz).
